CASE STUDY /
How moving budget away from untrackable print advertising and into digital lead generation helped create a predictable flow of qualified enquiries.
Before launching The Northern Marketer, I led marketing activity that helped ServiceSport UK move away from low-performing offline advertising and build a more measurable lead generation system.
ServiceSport UK operated in a specialist market where traditional advertising had been used for years. The problem was that long-running activity was being kept alive more out of habit than evidence.
The work was about proving what was and was not working, then moving budget into channels that could be tracked, tested and improved.
This case study shows how clearer tracking, better targeting and a shift away from offline advertising helped create more measurable lead generation results.
ServiceSport UK was spending time and budget on offline marketing, mainly advertising in an industry magazine with a limited readership.
The bigger issue was that the publication did not even reach the full sector the business served. Despite this, the fear of missing out kept the adverts running, even though they produced little to no meaningful inbound enquiry.
The result was wasted budget, wasted time and no clear route to growth.
The first step was to remove the guesswork. Discount codes and QR codes were added to the print adverts so response could be tracked properly.
The result was clear: the ads produced no meaningful engagement. That evidence made it easier to challenge the “we’ve always done it this way” mindset and redirect budget into digital channels where clicks, enquiries and conversion rates could be measured in real time.
Budget was shifted into a digital-first lead generation strategy built around targeted campaigns, optimised landing pages and clear enquiry capture.
Instead of hoping the right people saw an advert, the strategy focused on reaching the right audience directly, measuring behaviour and improving performance based on real data.
Within the first week, enquiries started coming in from the audience print advertising had failed to reach.

Trackable performance
Built a lead generation system that could be measured, tested and improved.
Too many businesses keep spending money on marketing because it feels familiar, not because it is working.
If a campaign cannot be tracked, it becomes very difficult to know whether it is creating demand or just quietly draining budget.
This work showed the value of moving from assumption-led marketing to evidence-led marketing. When the right channels, landing pages and tracking are in place, lead generation becomes clearer, more measurable and much easier to improve.
That same thinking now shapes how I support businesses through The Northern Marketer. Whether the budget is large or small, the principle is the same: marketing should be clear, trackable and linked to real business outcomes.
